We're excited to announce the first Archivematica Camp being held in Europe, cohosted by the University of York and Artefactual! Inspired by similar events like Hydra Camp, Islandora Camp and Fedora Camp, Archivematica Camp is intended to provide a space for anyone interested in or currently using Archivematica to come together, learn about the platform from other users, and share their experiences.

April 4-6, 2017 - The Ron Cooke Hub at the University of York

The Ron Cooke Hub is located just outside of York at the University of York's Heslington East campus. It is approximately 15 minutes by car and 30 minutes by bus from York city centre.

Schedule

Based on early registration feedback, below is the revised schedule for Archivematica Camp York. Some sessions are held together as one large group, while others are held concurrently. For the latter, there will generally be a session that is more suited to end-users at the same time as one more suited to systems administrators or developers. Campers should feel free to attend whatever sessions sound the most useful to them!

There is some built-in flexibility for last minute changes or ideas.

Tuesday, April 4: Day One (optional)

9:00am - 12:00pm	Archivematica for Absolute Beginners During the morning of Day One we'll ensure that everyone is comfortable with Archivematica, whether they're archivists, developers, or systems administrators. This is a half-day session intended for participants with no previous Archivematica experience whatsoever.

1:00pm - 5:00pm	Archivematica and AtoM The afternoon of Day One will be spent completing hands-on Archivematica exercises and looking at how Archivematica integrates with AtoM, a widely used open-source web based tool designed for archival description and online metadata and digital object discovery.

Note: participants are welcome to join the morning session, afternoon session, or both sessions as they wish. Participants may also wish to join the Camp on Day Two.

Wednesday, April 5: Day Two

9:45am - 11:00am	Workflow and deployment tours To kick off the camp, users of all stripes have the opportunity to show off their current implementations - or to discuss future implementations! If you're interested in discussing how Archivematica works (or might work) in your institution, come prepared with a 5-10 minute informal presentation and/or your questions.

11:15am - 12:00pm	Metadata deep dive During the Metadata Deep Dive we'll look at how Archivematica creates and handles metadata, focusing on the backbone of an Archivematica AIP: the METS.xml file.

1:00pm - 2:00pm	Specialized workflows Archivematica's specialized transfer types kick off different kinds of workflows within the system. In this session, we'll provide an overview of the transfer types (Standard, Zipped Bag, Unzipped Bag, etc.) and the tools and processes that make these workflows unique.	Technical architecture overview Take a peek under the hood at Archivematica's bones. We'll walk campers through the main technologies and tools that make up Archivematica and talk about the framework that keeps it all together.

2:15pm - 3:15pm	Introduction to the Appraisal tab The Appraisal tab is a brand-new addition to Archivematica's user interface. In this session, we'll demo how it currently works and start thinking about ways that it could be extended.	Storage Service management Archivematica works with your storage system through an application called the Storage Service. In this session, we'll talk about how to configure the Storage Service and the different types of storage that work with Archivematica.

3:30pm - 4:30pm	Validation micro-service developments We've been working on file validation! Integrating PREFORMA with Archivematica means that file validation is better than ever. We'll walk you through the new functionality that PREFORMA offers and discuss the integration project.	PREMIS as Linked Data The future is linked - should Archivematica be linked too? We'll talk about how PREMIS 3 might serve long-term goals by providing a linked open data solution for Archivematica.

Thursday, April 6: Day Three

9:00am - 10:15am	Deployment practices for development and production	User interface focus group Sure, we can make nice AIPs and DIPs, but is it pretty? This is a chance to chat about the user interface and usability in general, including how integrations with other systems look to the end user.

10:45am - 12:00pm	Automation tools The Automation Tools project is a set of python scripts that are designed to automate the processing of transfers in an Archivematica pipeline. Learn more about installing, configuring and running these scripts for large-scale processing or for pulling in content from other systems such as DSpace.

1:00pm - 2:15pm	Customizing the FPR Learn more about using the Format Policy Registry to add and edit tools, rules and commands for format identification, metadata extraction, normalization and other Archivematica micro-services.	Research Data Management / Deeper dive into format ID Research data management and format identification go together nicely as topics, since research data often have a long tail of niche file formats that pose a challenge for long-term preservation. At this session Jen Mitcham from University of York will talk about her institution's work on using Archivematica for research data preservation and on submitting new formats to PRONOM, and Evelyn McLellan will talk about Archivematica integration with Dataverse and the Jisc Research Data Shared Services pilot project.

On the first day of camp, we've created a sign-up sheet to help campers find a group to dine with. There are a variety of restaurants on the list, from local pubs to tapas to curry. If you know York well (or you're good with directions), consider being a group leader responsible for organising a time and meeting place for your group.

Wednesday April 5th: Group social

On the second night of camp, we're hosting a group social event at 1331, an event space in York city centre. We'll be providing a buffet dinner and a cash bar is available. Join us for a casual get-together!

1331 is located at 14 Grape Lane, just off Low Petergate. It is a little tricky to find, so be sure to take a look at the location map to orient yourself!

Hotels

There are lots of places to stay in York. Information can be found at Visit York. However, we have negotiated a special Archivematica Camp price at two of the York accommodation options that you can book yourself, quoting the booking code. Details below:

Staycity Aparthotels Paragon Street

We have reserved a block of self-catering rooms at the Staycity Aparthotels Paragon Street for a nightly rate of £74. There are 20 rooms available for attendees who wish to stay from 3-6 April. The hotel is a 15 minute walk to York city centre, and a 15 minute bus ride (10 minute drive, 45 minute walk) to The Ron Cooke Hub. Every room includes with a small kitchenette.

• One Bedroom Apartments: The rooms can accommodate up to 4 people, with a choice of 1 double bed or 2 single beds. There is also a twin sofa bed in the lounge area.

• Breakfast: Price includes a Grab and Go breakfast box.

• Car Parking: There is a Q Park car park located on Kent Street, priced from £11 per 24hours. More information can be found on the following link: http://www.q-park.co.uk/parking/york/q-park-barbican

• Booking: Please note that to book at the preferred rate, you must contact Staycity York directly. Contact information, as well as the booking reference code, will be included in your registration confirmation email. Rooms at this special rate are available on a first come first served basis and must be booked before 27th March in order to qualify for the reduced price.

Queens Hotel

We have reserved a block of double rooms at the Queens Hotel for a nightly rate of £68 bed and breakfast. This is a central city centre hotel, next to the river and a short walk from the train station. There are frequent buses between the city centre and The Ron Cooke Hub at Heslington East via the number 4 and UoY66 (allow 30 mins for your journey), or the Ron Cooke Hub can be reached by foot if you have 55 minutes to spare!

• Double rooms: The rooms have a double bed.

• Breakfast: Sit down breakfast in the hotel restaurant facility is included in the price.

• Booking: Please note that to book at the preferred rate, quote the booking code which will be included in your registration confirmation email. Code of Conduct

The Archivematica community is dedicated to providing a welcoming and positive experience for everyone, whether they are in a formal session or a social setting related to an Archivematica event, or are taking part in activities online. Archivematica community participants come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of professional, personal and social backgrounds; whatever these may be, we treat colleagues with dignity and respect. We are sensitive to the fact that the international nature of the Archivematica community means that we span many different social norms around language and behaviour and we strive to conduct ourselves in ways that are unlikely to cause offense. In the event that someone’s conduct is causing offense or distress, the Archivematica Camp has a detailed Anti-Harassment Policy, details below, which can be applied to address the problem.

The first step in dealing with any serious misconduct is to contact a member of the organizing group, or a counsellor at an Archivematica Camp (please see counsellors, above). These people will be made known before and during any Archivematica Camp event.

Anti-Harassment Policy

The Archivematica community is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference/camp experience for everyone. If you have been harassed, please consult this protocol for conflict resolution which makes clear how we can help.

The Archivematica community has established the following policy to make it clear that we do not tolerate harassment in any form. Sexual or discriminatory language and imagery are not appropriate for any event venue, including talks, or any other communication channel used during the conference (such as social media).

Harassment includes:

• offensive verbal comments related to sex, gender, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, age, race, religion;
• sexual or discriminatory images in public spaces;
• deliberate intimidation;
• stalking;
• harassing photography or recording;
• sustained disruption of talks or other events;
• inappropriate physical contact; and
• unwelcome sexual attention.

The lingua franca of Archivematica Camp is English; however, English may not be the native language of Archivematica Camp participants. Further, cultural norms around what may be considered obscene and offensive communication will vary among Archivematica Camp attendees. Campers are asked to please be mindful of the international character of Archivematica Camp, and to use respectful and clear language free of slang to facilitate communication.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers and Archivematica representatives (or their designees) may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender, expulsion from Archivematica Camp, or contacting a higher authority such as a representative from the offender’s institution.

If a participant raises a concern relating to actions covered by this policy in good faith, there will be no retaliation for bringing forward their concern. Threatening or taking action against someone for invoking this policy or for participating in any related investigation will be considered a violation of this policy.

Participants are expected to follow the anti-harassment policy at all Camp-related venues, Camp-related social events, and online communication channels.

We expect attendees and speakers past and present to be respectful to each other, and we will deal with any incidents that arise, including on social media.

We value your participation in the Archivematica community and your support in keeping the Archivematica community a safe, welcoming, and friendly space for fellow participants.

This policy is based on the PASIG Code of Conduct, portions of which were modified from the Open Repositories’ code of conduct, which was itself modified from Seattle Attic’s code of conduct and the Ada Initiative’s event harassment policy.
