Creating FPR entries

Format groups

Format groups are high-level groupings applied to file formats. The groups are intended to be a search aid when looking for a specific format. The format group is only used in Archivematica's Preservation Planning tab - it is not used in the METS file or in any preservation activities.

There are currently (as of Archivematica 1.6.1) 28 format groups:

  • Audio

Binary (Data) Binary (Executable) CAD Data Visualization Database Dataset Desktop Publishing Disk Image Email Flash Font GIS Image (Raster) Image (Vector) Model Package Portable Document Format Presentation Spreadsheet Statistics Text (Markup) Text (Plain) Text (Source Code) Text (Structured) Unknown Video Word Processing

Suggested edits

  • Narrow down number of groups by combining like groups - i.e. CAD + Model, Spreadsheet + Word Processing + Desktop Publishing.
  • Consider modelling groups on PRONOM groups
